Countess of Chester Hospital (Carbon Energy Fund framework) is procuring the QEHB Heat Recovery Project (procurement closed for opted-in suppliers through the Carbon Energy Fund framework), which replaces 2.5 MW of existing air-cooled chiller capacity with 2.5 MW of heat recovery chillers, installs 0.5 MW of geothermal wells within the QE site, and delivers a new Energy Centre adjacent to the hospital to house heat recovery and ground source heat pumps. The scope includes new low-grade heating distribution from the heat recovery chillers and geothermal wells to the Energy Centre, installation of 3.0 MW of water-source heat pumps to lift low-grade heat to low temperature hot water (LTHW), LTHW distribution from the Energy Centre to the hospital, and replacement of 3 MW of gas-fired boilers with LTHW plate heat exchangers inside the hospital. The project also requires a new HV supply to the Energy Centre, solar PV arrays to offset the increased electrical energy consumption (by PFI), and Digital Twin modelling of the hospital to identify further HVAC energy savings.
